Hi folks ... digging through old files .
Image taken on Helgoland , an Island some 60 km off the german coastline .
Island is famous for its seals and the large gannet colony .
Wished the light was better .... but the gannets fly to the rookery depending on the wind , so had to take the given options .

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous posting ...

Nice light and pose on this gannet. Like the blue water background as well. Detail looks great.

Really nice pose and background, Andreas. The bird pops against the dark blue water. Detail looks good. The shadow on the breast is unfortunate though. I think a shot of contrast would do the image a world of good - as presented, the bird looks quite flat on my screen. Really strong overall though. TFS

Great looking pose and nice background with a good amount of texture. Shadow is not super ideal, but not terrible either. I also am finding the shot a little a flat especially around the face / eye, I would expect that area to be darker from that gannets I've photographed. I suspect you may disagree (which is ok) but figured I would throw it out there. TFS

Thanks folks for your kind comments , much appreciated .

Understand your reservations about the tonal " flatness" in parts of the frame . Might give the head area a bit more tonal depth ... thanks for the pointer . Thought i leave it that way ... as it did fit to the given lighting to my eyes . But will take another look and RP

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas, I think you probably posted the original pretty much as the situation was, the repost looks aesthetically more appealing. Gannets are beautiful and it is often tempting to ramp up colours, satuation and contrast, but their colours do depend so much on the particular time of the year and the available lighting. As usual you have brought out super detail in the highlights.

Wonderful breaking pose, and beautiful blue bg. Yes, the shadow is too bad, but you didn't have any choice in the matter. I like the OP, maybe better than the RP, but might have opted for just a touch of saturation on the head.
