    Default Peregrine Falcon: Crop Experiment

Back in 2017 I posted a small-in-frame version of this image, with the immature female Peregrine small against a vegetated sand dune at Sandy Hook. Weeding through old files I decided to reprocess the image and experiment with how large a crop it might take. I know this isn't perfect, and certainly shows some signs of a large crop, but I thought it held up pretty well since this is just 10% of the original by pixel count. There appears to be some motion blur of the mantle, maybe from the speedy bird's aerodynamic form as the wind blew over the back of the bird. A faster shutter speed might have helped. Anyway, your thoughts are welcomed.

Interesting image. Image shows signs of large crop when viewed at 1600px.

I wish for better head angle.

The dorsal view is great. Wish the background was solid. The image quality held up great for a huge crop like that.

Quite good really. Some NR to the BG would help.
Agree a more engaging eye would lift the image.

I am actually ok with the IQ but the HA kills it for me. As you know I would be more than OK if the head was parallel to the back of the camera but it is turned away. not a keeper in my book if you want my honest opinion , the image is dull and lacks saturation too

TFS you will get a good one sooner or later!

While the heavy crop is starting to show a bit, IG is much better than I would have predicted. I cannot crop equivalently into my DX2 and get results like this.
Detail on the bird is still decent and background noise is decently controlled. Biggest issue is the head angle as others have mentioned.

Thank you all for the helpful comments. To my eye, although the bird is angled just slightly away, the head is just slightly turned back to put it pretty close to focal plane -- but that's just my eye. Shortcomings of the large crop are there; I just thought it interesting that at 10% it came out as well as it did. Here's another frame from the same outing. This one isn't quite as large a crop -- around 20% of full pixel count -- although I'm not sure the IQ held up quite as well. HA, to my eye, is a bit better. Same settings as OP. With a speedster like this, 1/3200s would have been better. WDYT? Your comments are always helpful for improving my self-evaluation.

The IQ is not good looks a bit blurry

how much you can crop an image depends on how sharp the RAW is. If you are using a cheap zoom lens the RAW is not going to be tack sharp no matter what. Therefore you won’t be able to crop as much. if your RAW was tack sharp you could easily crop down to 20% of the original and no one would be able to tell

I will post and example later.
