    Default Flocking Banded Stilts

My first thread here. Thanks for having me aboard.

Most of my flock shots are duds. There's a lot to control and a lot of luck is needed but I'm happy with this one.

These guys feed on coastal wetlands but when ephemeral salt lakes hundreds of kms away start to fill they head off to breed there. It's not known how they know. They can cover up to 1000 kms in a day and they carry up to 50% of their body weight in eggs.

    Taken at Avalon, Australia. Sony A9 + FE400 + 2x TC hand-held. 1/1500s, f6.7, ISO 320. Small crop of right edge.

Welcome to BPN avian critique forum

Thanks for sharing this image with us, I am undecided about this. it is posted very small and doesn't show any details, most of the birds are OOF and the highlights are blown while the and blacks are blocked (harsh light) and it is just too busy. perhaps a wider angle to show some of the habitat would have worked here or if there were more separation between the birds with a couple of them at least sharp and detailed.... a panoramic crop to emphasize size of the flock and motion would also work better than the square crop

tough condition to get anything useful

TFS and looking forward to more :)

Welcome to the forum Ernst. What a terrific wallpaper! The dof has picked up plenty of birds in focus to make this a pleasure to look at.

    Thanks Arash.

How do you post something large under 600 kb?
I already had to crop and reduce JPG quality to 97%.

Thanks Colin. The challenge is as per Goldilocks: individual birds not too large (just looks like a group) and not too small (just looks like a pattern), with the nearest in focus and those further away not so sharp as to clutter.

Ernst, here is my process for posting. Process the RAW image then convert to 16 bit TIFF. Finish PP off in photoshop then export save for web and devices. Set width at 1600 and optimise file size to 550 kb. Then save which will be saved as a jpeg.

    Thanks.

I use PhotoLab and export to JPEG. The more detail there is in an image the fewer the mpix on the long side there has to be, or lower JPEG quality, to get under 600 KB. This has to be trial and error as the export feature doesn't offer a target file size.

    Welcome to BPN Ernst!

Nice and creative first post. Beautiful species and a very artistic shot with loats of movement. I wish more bird were in focues though. I like the attempt but agree with earlier comments about a few nits. Mainly the high contrast between blown highlights and blocked shadows.
I would take some of the top where the background is made out of the bright sky. Try to reduce the contrast a tad and you might have something nice out of this.

    Thanks for the feedback.

It seems that Adobe software is needed to produce a big enough image anyway, and that's not going to happen.

    So long.

Like the idea behind this one. The light wasn't ideal. I like the pattern the flock makes.
