    Default Mallard color harmony

Taken a few days ago. A common bird, but I was pleased with the soft light and nice match of background colors to the bird.

    D500 500 PF. f/6.3. 1/1600s

Small crop for comp. Removed a few dust spots.

I agree, the matching colors of bird and BG are very nice. The white base I find a bit distracting. I wonder if using a very light opacity brush to brush in some of the beige color - not to match it but just to tone down the white a bit - would help. But if the white is snow, that might not be what you want.

    Bill:

I see your point. It is in fact snow, so I am probably going to leave it in. Thank you for your observation.

The earth tones in the background match the bird wonderfully. I don't mind the snow strip. Since that is how you have captured it.

Lovely colours throughout, I like the snow. It blends well with the under tail and feather wings. Nice detail and I like your chosen crop.

The duck is beautiful. Tack sharp with great colors in the BG.
I do wish the snow strip was not there as it pulls the eye away but respect your wish to keep scene as you saw it.
Do you have an image with the duck higher and removed from the snow strip?

I don't mind the white at the bottom.. Nice processing, has a cold feel.

Thanks Dan, I was trying to capture the cold environment in the frame and processed it accordingly.

Gail: I really like the color match of the hen against the brown grasses on the far shore of the lake. But it is a very narrow band, with darker trees above and snow below, so the framing requires I leave the snow in. Thanks for your comment,

I like this, Randy. I'm a fan of the white strip and the color harmony as you've mentioned. Most of the points have already been covered, but I'd brighten the bird's face just a bit to make it stand out a little more. TFS

Hi Randy, lovely soft light, and I like the glide pose, and especially that the head is separated from the far wing. Good underwing feather detail, and agree, the BG compliments the mallard nicely.

Glide poses don't usually do it for me, but this works, even if i want the far wing to be a bit higher. Sharpness and exposure look great, and I love the graded background. frame has a very authentic winter feel to it.
