A bit of a boxy crop but I didn't quite get the bird in the centre of the frame, so all the full frame horizontals were a bit awkward. Just trying to get used to some new gear so was picking some friendly subjects to play around with combos and settings but I thought I'd put this one up for advice

    Nikon d500
    600mm f4 + TCE14 iii
    ISO 400
    1/1600th f8

RAW processed in Capture 1 - need to get the guide!

Lovely. The crop may be boxy but the head is positioned nicely for a pleasing comp. Good detail, color and HA. How nice to have such "friendly subjects" on your side of the pond; I'd love to photograph these guys.

What a gorgeous bird. The IQ rocks and i have always liked boxy crops so you will hear no complaints from me.
    POV and all are excellent.
But now, I can no longer speak to you because you have gone to the DARK SIDE!! Bad bad Mike!!
My 1 DX 3 is arriving on Friday so I shall be "giving you the gears" for the next little while.

This is really sweet. The details are money and you caughta very engaging look. I love the low angle and soft bokeh to make him stand out.

I use to shun the 4x5 vertical crop (versus 2x3), but now it's all I use.

EWhat a gorgeous duck!! Excellent colours, details, and even the boxy crop works well. I'll trade you a Wood Duck for one of these!

Hi Mike, excellent detail and colours on this fellow. He looks like his head has been combed back. I understand your crop issues, but on a personal side, I'm the opposite to Gail, the crop doesnt work for me. The overall IQ tends to make up for that. Well captured.

Great subject and very nice portrait. I have been using 4X5 also for verticals lately.
You will enjoy the D500. Not a ton of pixels, not sure what you are used to, but the frame rate
and AF are a lot of fun...

Cheers Gail - well done for keeping Canon in business . I really hope the 1dx3 is a winner, but I got a really good offer on a Nikon 600 that meant it was going to cost me less to switch than update with Canon. Not sure for my shooting it will make a huge difference.

Looking forward to seeing the results of the new beast

Thanks Arash, I'm determined to learn a bit extra in the PP department this year so hopefully C1P can help with that - I'll be relying on your guide for starters!

One of a group of about 8, so send a woodie over and I'll pop one of these in the post!

Thanks Andreas. I'm sure I'll get to grips with C1P in due course, but I'll grab a guide anyway to see what others have found lurking in there.

Part way through Dans book. Its starting to make sense, just difficult for me choosing the levels of blending required in particular channels, but I'll get there

I would prefer a looser crop but nothing else below unfortunately

Late to the party but what a shot. I've never seen this duck before and it looks great here. Love the detail, tones throughout, and a very nice background. I'm okay with the crop as is. Good DOF. TFS

Excellent colors on the bird and eye rocks.

I would probably look for little bit more space at the bottom.
