Another short-eared owl image from British Columbia. The cropping on this one was a bit of a tough call for me, I usually like tighter crops to show more details but I deiced to go a bit loose here and also put the owl a bit high in the frame to show more of the habitat. Hope you like it

    Arash:

Nice techs as always. It is a bit of a challenge from a composition standpoint with this type of image, but I like it overall. The colors, sense of depth because of the foreground and background components, and down the barrel pose works well. If I have a photo where the composition is a challenge, I will def. crop it several different ways, and view it over a couple of days to see which one works best on repeated viewing. Usually one will 'speak' to you more. Oddly enough, I will often look at a very small version of the image, such as the thumbnail , where you really don't see the detail, just the framing and composition, to help me decide.
In this case, I would normally tempted to move the bird of the horizontal centerline a bit more, but the down the barrel pose often works well more centered.

Ah the joys of composition! Not a hard science, one of those artsy things!

    Cheers.

I think you found a nice compromise here Arash. Just enough FG vegetation to give us a hint of how low it was flying. The stare is still intense and grabs our attention. The only thin I would do here is blend in the whitish area at left edge. A good example of BIF-in-habitat image.

Hi Arash , i like the small in the frame aspect and the inclusion of the habitat . Works well for me .
Nice tones and colors . Just think the HL looking a bit hot .... no detail in the red/green channels .

    Nice one and TFS Andreas

Never got them to play ball like this Arash. I like the OOF soft wings, juxtapose to the sharp head. The smooth BKG adds standout, but personally I find it a tad too much, and just jars slightly, but just personal preference.

Still a fine image well executed.

I like the idea, although I think a bit tighter crop in from both sides would look good.

Superb image Arash, with wonderful eye contact and in-coming pose. Nice inclusion of the habitat as well. Very nice POV and composition.

I really like the wider view here. Setting is money and you show it perfectly.

Nice to see the setting. Great pose and eye contact. Love those yellow eyes. The crop is spot on for me.
