    Default Flying Low

A baldie flying low over the Mississippi.

    Nikon D500, 800mm 5.6, 1/1600, f5.6, ISO 6400.

Some processing notes: I start in Capture One with RAW edits, then save and open in PhotoShop, and use adjustment layers in Topaz for DeNoise, run a layer for clarity on the bird masking out the areas outside of the bird, then one for sharpness, and lastly in Viveza on NIK adjusting the bird as Viveza sometimes adds too much blue to birds, but overall I'm liking the plug ins. Hoping to be out shooting some more owls and other birds in a week.

the birds looks ok (could be sharper) and I do like the calling pose. But something totally goofy is going on in the BG (top part) looks like chicken pox :D :) the filters you are using are junk and ruin the image, do not use. there was another guy who had a similar issue from using these junk filters see this thread http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...d-Hummingbirds

all you need is C1P, PS and NI as explained in guides you have, you don't need one extra bit of sw and work beyond that.

Hi Paul, agree with Arash that this posting is far better and overall going in the right direction. I too am puzzled what the mosaic looking artifacts are and how they have been generated and from what? Your call on what raw convertor you choose to use, but again, I agree to ditch stuff like NIK, it truly is pants, but if you you want to make your images shine, then 'less is more' in terms of how much you process an image, you don't always need the kitchen sink! Plus, in 'parking' these third party plug-ins try to get under the skin of PSCC, as it has everything there that you need and more, the key is finding the right element. Subject to IQ I would crop a bit tighter.

Great flight pose. I like the head contained against the dark wing. There is certainly something weird going in in the BG. I've had mixed results from Topaz DeNoise; it seems to work well for me on some images, and terrible on others. I don't know which version you are using. I've had trouble getting DeNoise AI v.2.0 to work as a plug-in with my older version of PS. I know Arash has never been a fan of Topaz products, and you can't quarrel with his results. But then, Glenn Bartley and Alan Murphy have both raved about the new AI products, and it's hard to fault their results either. So go figure.

Topaz denoise is not the problem... It works well, I and others I know use it on every photo...
It it the other plugins that are the problem.

Thanks, I was the problem :) I think the issue was I forgot to simply mask the upper part of the image, which I've now learned to do more. I live close to this area so can get these shots daily thankfully, and will go back again. Frankly as I said I have Neat Image, and it's great, but I find Topaz DeNoise current version quite good along with sharpen. I think it can be easily fixed reprocessing it by making sure the areas outside of the bird are masked, and they have a handy edge-aware part of the software now which is very helpful.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I think you are over complicating things Paul, but if it works for you then fine, just be careful you don't keep sharpening your files within your Workflow process. Whenever you Export for output after cropping, only then do you do a 'sharpening for output' at ie 100% at 1600px which is 'perceptual' sharpening and each file may take a fraction more or less, subject to how sharp actual Raw file is.

repost file is small but I am seeing the same issue, the junk filters are goofing up most of the top and the right border. in fact the upper part of the image is just yucky. It looks some kind of wave effect. Time to go back to RAW and start fresh I'd also get rid of those OOF branches sticking out of the water

As I said before Paul on a previous posting. Would it not be a good idea to forward the raw file to Arash, he can make solid feedback to both camera set-up & file. Based on time he might be able to do a RP as you nbpth appear to usr C1 with some helpful steps, as this is what we do in the Wildlife Forum. Just a thought

Agree with the others here. But that screaming pose is great.
