Another female Common Merganser n flight. I cannot seem to get a good
Male flight shot this season but there is some time left..
I shot this with my 300 f2.8 and 1.7 tc.
For Nikon shooters, this combo is a bit better than the 500pf,
Heavier but a bit faster and better bokah.
Easily hand holdable if you are waiting for a 500pf...

Bird looks great - super sharp with great eye contact. Great look at the serrated bill as well. Only wish for smoother BG.....

Neat bird with good details and great complimentary colors. As some say here, the BG is what it is!

Dan that is a peach of a shot you really have nailed it. The background is just fine and in all likelihood as the human eye would see it..... how often can we recall seeing birds against an absolutely featureless background using the naked eye.. just a thought.

Perfect downward wing position. Tack sharp.
I feel this needs a little tweak in the blacks.
BG is busy but not a deal breaker.
    Excellent image!

Splendid bird, plenty of feather detail. I used this combo of 300 with 1.7TC for many years with great success.
Hope Nikon release a 1.7TC 111 soon to able it to keep up with high FPS bodies, electronic aperture control.

Love how the neck looks like a missile. So streamlined. The flight pose is right on.
