AS I'm sure Jon Ashton will testify, this can be a great but frustrating place for the shorties. The marshland they like is usually against the sun, but occasionally they fly onto the golf course for the best sun angles. However, this was a windy day, so great light but no activity despite 2 hours stood freezing. Then the sun goes behind cloud, the winds drop and the birds came out to play in the dull light. A passing walker told us they were showing well 200 yards away, so I left the other photographers and got a decent fly past

Nicely caught Mike, wish I had been able to make it! The sideways glance in you direction makes for a really eye catching image. Nice background too, it's not too often that happens!

    Very nice Mike!
An almost direct gaze and a beautiful BG.
    Nice and sharp.
I would go 1/3 of a stop brighter and you would still convey the cloudy day atmosphere.
I would also do a "kiss" of NR on the owl.
All in all a fine frame!

Glad you listened to the passing walker. This a beautiful flight capture and nice and sharp. Excellent head angle, and wonderful dorsal view.

Nice pose with nice eye contact. The light as you mentioned was against you..
A keeper for sure until you get a better one..

Great look at this guy, particularly at those eye! Image isn't tack sharp and is getting a bit noisy, but it does show the bird nicely. Agree about adding a bit more light. I would also consider
warming it up a bit as it feel a bit cold to me as is.

Hi Mike frustrating shooting conditions, but you have come away with a good flight pose, and head turn. Nicely separated from the BG and nice colours too. NR reduction already mentioned. Still, well captured.

Looking good, well caught. Had no success with owls this winter unlike last winter.

Nicely captured, with good head turn and background. Good comments above from Gail and others. Add me to the jealous camp. I too have spent several hours in the freezing cold on a number of recent evenings, but our Shorties only appear at great distance and when it's too dark to photograph them in flight. Well done.

Great pose here. Digging that dorsal view and the look back. Killer background as well.
