Is it a large crop Bill? I ask because there isn't as much detail as I normally associate with your images - maybe because the feathers are puffed out?

Jonathan, this is a large crop but not huge; down to 8.6 MP from the 20.6 MP original, or 65% of full width. I've certainly gotten sharper images with greater crops. This was taken from inside my house looking out an open window. I have on some occasions experienced some sort of thermal distortion because of the differential between camera temperature and outside temperature; I think there is some sort of thermal boundary just on the outside of the warmer space. Perhaps that's the issue, although it doesn't appear as strongly on the Cardinal female image in my previous post, taken under the same conditions at about the same time.

Love the snow here. Nice to have that darker background. The framing is nice as well. Bird looks sharp on the eye to me.

I agree the detail on the bird is not that great for the combo you are using and your skills.
Your answer may be correct. I never stop down my 500pf unless I am really really close, is there a reason you did here?
Just wondering, it is designed to shoot wide open, I hesitate to stop down, not sure it gives you much.

Dan, I only stopped down one stop, from fully open 5.6 down to 6.3. I've generally been under the impression that one stop down from wide open will produce better IQ with most lenses. Perhaps this is not the case with the 500PF. In any event, I don't think that contributed to the issue on this image.
