    Default gannet macro

Just when you thought you had seen the last gannet from the recent trip to Bonaventure Island .......!

This "macro" image of the face shows the very fleshy outer eyelid. My theory is that they need this to cushion their eyes when they hit the water at the end of the plunge. They hit the water at up to 90 km/h or 55 mph!

These eyes are beautiful and it really shows the movable part of the upper mandible. I like the composition, soft light and details.

Hi John. I really like the composition on this one. Great colors and details. This is a very nice view of the "hinge" in the upper mandible. Very cool texture and patterns in the eye.

Great shot John and thanks for all your time and energy spent on the new avian forum ... a valuable resource that we are fortunate to have here on BPN.

Thanks Bill and to all for great comments on this image. I'll be back with Chris Dodds during his first August Gannets Galore trip so look out for more images!

I really think the new forum will be a good contribution. I know I've learned a lot already and it's only been up for a few days.
