So nice to get this guy up on a perch. Really beautiful pose. Sharpness and details look really good, but I think the face could use a bit more sharpening.
The very boxy crop and position in the frame also feel a bit off to me. Would be interesting to see either 8x10 vertical or 3x2 horizontal. I think you could
add few points of black as well for more contrast, but I know these very early morning grouse shots don't have the light to really maximize contrast.
Hi Kevin, I think this is a better frame compared to the others, however it does also fall into that pattern I was referring too, as if all three postings were 'batched processed', processed identically even thought there may have been some subtle changes to each image. Overall there is a heavy magenta cast and all I can do is work on the numbers until I'm back home, so if colour looks off or it's a tad dark in exposure (only added less than a third of a stop) sorry, but it's the right starting point, with everything balanced in the RGB channels. Adding any more contrast or blacks as presented, will only add to a more Contrasty looking image, with solid blacks and light whites, you need more midtone to give substance and this is where your details are. There isn't much depth or tonal range in the plumage currently, but I feel there is in the original capture.
I've only done four quick adjustments, WB to get an even basis, then three Curves and you can see in the feet and log there is much more. Get the file over and lets see if we can move thing along, and as I said, it might be a camera thing which has happened before with members and or, you just need a bit more in PP and your monitor is calibrated correctly.
Thanks Steve definitely looks better than mine. Especially in the Background greens . Mine was too washed out and more punch in the log Did you do the adjustments to the background and log separately. They weren't batched processed just my same adjustments so they all look the same.
Hi Kevin, all global adjustments, but key is having the correct WB to start with, then you can work on Colour Management knowing there are no casts. I also added some selected USM on the plumage to see what there might be.
Got the file thank you, so will have a quick look, but will get back to you with my thoughts on a revised file next week. If you tagged your email with the file great, will drop a hi res file back with suggestions and some reading matter re PS. BTW have you subscribed to Adobe Cloud and therefore have ‘free’ updates, or running old software as it makes a difference.
