I love the "ears". What a wonderful evolutionary story must be behind the great head gear of this vulture.
The image was underexposed to protect the whites and I like the effect. I brought the shadows up selectively on head and neck.
    Costa Rica. Shot from blind
    Canon 1 DX 600mm 1.4 x
    ISO 800 SS 1/2000 f8
    Nothing added or cloned.
Processed in LR and PS CC
Comments and critiques always learned from and appreciated with thanks,
    Gail
PS. Looks like I got some posterization in the BG when I converted to JPEG.

The crop works well here. Nice background. Great pose and nice detail on the bird.

Hi Gail, nice species with some very punchy colours.

The lifting in the neck feathers is noticeable and I feel the face is slightly hidden with the darks/contrast, there is a lot more in there and adds more form to the face. Just watch upping the saturation in key colours as it will mask/loose the finer detail. I would blow in some more subtle mush at the foot to add a continuity across the image. Personally I might loose a sliver off the top?

This is a pretty cool image, I like the head shot and close up details. I agree with Steve re. the face I would pull up the darks, BG shows a bit of posterization might be fixed by another round of NR

    Hi Steve,
Happy New Year to you! I agree with your suggestion of a sliver off the top and maybe add in some fuzziness (but I hate to clone these days-trying to get it all as is through the viewfinder).
I did not touch the neck feathers so I am not sure what you are seeing. I only lifted the neck and face area.

Ditto Gail, I trust you had a nice, relaxing and peaceful festive period.

It's the grey neck feathers, they look lifted as there is some lack of detail and more noticeable grain, something I would not have expected at 800. I assumed that was what you had referred to when you mentioned 'I brought the shadows up selectively on head and neck' unless you used NIK DE here?

Great title, and great bird. Love the detail in the head. Exposure looks great to me - the slightly somber tone works for the bird - and on my screen I'm not seeing any ill effects of lifting the shadows on head and neck.

Beautifully composed portrait, and a great look at the extended head and neck. Love the unique design of these creatures. I do see the slightest bit of noise in the neck feathers.

Very cool bird. I like the richness of the colours and contrast here. I won't comment on the posterization as I get that at times too and drives me nuts lol!

Dan, when you see it, note what you are doing ie boosting individual colours ie greens, then back off, just a thought.

I find it worse with NR, even without boosting the colours, especially when the BG is mottled such as here, and only once downsized. And yes, green are the culprit!
