    Default Acorn Woodpecker Portrait

    Taken today in Irvine, CA...

    Nikon D5, 180-400mm f/4e @ 500mm (i.e., 1.4x TC engaged), ISO 1000, f/5.6, 1/250", handheld ...

Post processed in C1Pro + PS CC + Topaz Sharpen AI. This last one is what I have just started to play with, and it seems to do a decent job on some frames. In this case, I should probably have used a higher ISO along with higher shutter speed but I quickly noticed the woodpecker on this perch and could not react fast enough to change my settings. So the "stabilize" mode in Topaz Sharpen AI seemed to help a bit on the final output...

I like the bird- nice and sharp with great details on the head. Perfect head turn.
I am OK with the BG and I like your crop.
It looks like you applied NR to the branch and it has made the perch look really blurry and unnatural. Easy fix.
It is easy to be an armchair critic but it would have been great if you had moved to your left and eliminated the bright orange/yellow area in LUC.

The look back pose makes this one. Love that red head. The eye is pretty neat as well.

Great capture and neat bird . Agree with the comments biggest thing is the softness of the branch close to the bird and brighter light near the top. TFS

Neat bird!! I like its' look-back pose. Good perch, but I agree it has the NR look to it. I only apply NR to the BG, almost never the subject and its' perch. Neat mottled BG with nice colours. That yellow spot that Gail mentions could be blended-in a bit to both minimize its presence and retain some of its' colour. Glad Topaz Sharpen is working out for you!

Agree with the points. I did not get decent shot of these wood peckers when I was in Arizona. I will have to plan for another trip.

Good to see that you have filled the frame with the bird. I guess you can process this image again.
