These birds are much smaller in real life than what I thought. Like a skinny pigeon but more elongated and with a big bill.
    Taken in Costa Rica.

Crop to 80%FF. Nothing added or cloned. NR to BG and USM to JPEG.

What a beauty Gail. Funny reading your description -- when I saw these birds I also thought they were smaller than I expected! Great perch and BG, and lovely pose from the bird. Detail looks great as does the exposure. I do wish for a bit more DOF to try to get that far foot a bit more in focus. I would also clone out that tiny bit of moss that touches the bird's chest. It's a minor thing but it draws my eye. Costa Rica is high on my list of photography spots. TFS,

    Gail:

Wonderful colors, bird and background. Interesting perch without being over powering. Spectacular bill, well exposed overall, just slightly hot on top of bill.

A real beauty. Oh, and I like the pano crop for this shot as well!

    Cheers

Very nice. Love all that moss on the perch. Nice pose and detail on the bird. Background is right on as well.

    Hello Gail,

This is a wonderful capture. Details, perch, background...all great, but what I like the most is the bill...wow, what a beauty! TFS

An impressive image, that is some bill that little bird has there! The head and bill look beautifully rendered, the plumage detail is very good. That is an exceptionally clear background, the image is beautiful!
In retrospect maybe a little more DOF would not go amiss (??), I don't think it matters but I wonder if there is some green light reflected as a slight cast on yellow underside plumage?

Another beauty! Ditto all the positive comments above.

My only nit is that I find the comp. slightly awkward. This seems to be a difficult bird to balance in frame due to the long beak, but I think taking a hair off the right and adding more room to the LHS would off-set the bird perfectly. Not a major issue whatsoever and it could just be personal preference. Keep 'em coming, Gail!

A beauty, Gail. Razor sharp around the eye and the bill, which he so nicely posed almost parallel to the sensor. Lovely BG. I was also surprised at their size when I first saw one. I can see Alex's point about the little sprig of moss, and Aditya's about the comp; but both are very minor nits that don't detract from a lovely shot.

What a great looking bird, and beautifully captured, Gail. Nice rich colors in wonderful light. Exceptional background as well.
