Hello John,
Nice behavioural capture, I gather your subject is scent marking to make everyone aware of his presence? Did he 'paw' the ground afterwards, it would have been nice to see:)
Was just thinking, this image would work very well as part of a series, or a story sequence. As a single frame it would have been better if the eye was visible, IMO.
Love the trees in the BG albeit the FG is a tad bright, so are the whites behind the subject's forelegs - would tame those bright areas as much as possible.
Composition works well, subject looks sharp with good detail despite the low SS Really pretty out there this time of the year, would love to visit this Park one day!
Have a wonderful week ahead, thank you so much for sharing,
Kind regards,

Thanks Gabriela,
Yes that is exactly what he is doing. He did paw the ground. Here he is working the licking branch. There is just bare dirt at the bottom of the branch from all the bucks working this scrape.

The image demonstrates behaviour very well, I'm inclined to agree with Gabriela, you must have a super collection of these deer showing various behavioural aspects, I'm sure they would indeed look good as a sequence.
I can't add to much more than Gabriela has said, i would lower the exposure a little and lessen the highlights, this may mean pulling the darks up a tad.

Hi John , yes a behavioural shot .
But you have posted a lot better images , to be honest .
The biggest shortcoming for me is the head facing away from the viewer .
I would drop the exp and try to recover the whites as they do look burned .
Sorry John .... just my honest thoughts .
