Default Endangered Snail Kite with Nesting Material

Abundant in Latin America, Snail Kites in the U.S. are only found in Florida and are highly endangered.

Also called the Everglades Kite, they are one of the most specialized of all hawks. They feed almost exclusively on the apple snail.

Fewer than 900 birds and 400 mated pairs were recorded in 2007. When they were listed as endangered in 1967, there were fewer than 100 individuals: their population peaked in 1999 at around 3,600.

I captured this image last April in Central Florida, Nikon D850 Handheld, Nikkor 500mm f4 +1.4TC from a boat.

Superb crisp flight image, especially like the interesting stick it has picked and the way it's checking you out.

very nice Juan, love the nesting material and the dangling feet. I'd try to raise the exposure in the tail a area a bit.

Grat pose Juan, perfectly sharp, I agree with Arash about raising the exposure a touch

You can try the "shadows" slider for the tail and parts of the belly during raw conversion to see how that goes. I do think the whole image could use at least 1/3 stop raise in exposure though. Neat nesting material, and good pose. Sharp. I like the dangling feet and the nice details and patterns on the near wing. Just to clean up the presentation I would also remove the small fleck in the lower left corner.

Nice pose and the nesting material is a bonus. The two toned background is very nice as well.

This is great. I love the pose, BG, and nesting material. I agree the shadows can go up a bit. Dangling feet are awesome. Would love to photograph this species. TFS
