Handsome looking buck, he looks like a cool dude in that light.
I see Canon is also prone to the dark splodgey background, now i see it in someone else's image it makes me a little more accepting. I think I would be tempted to reduce the noise selectively on the background to remove the graininess where the dark greens meet the blacks and yellows.

Hi John, I like this and I feel it has a lot more potential.

The blacks and Contrast are too much that is what gives you your 'dark splodgey BKG' as Jon put, easily rectified I feel and I would run some more NR overall. If ethics allow, then I would also remove or tame some of those brighter HL 'grasses/vegetation' in the BKG. Darken the BKG via Curves and also usr Curves via saturation get a more intense, rich light. Finally cropping a little of both the top and at the foot. Just be mindful John to ensure your exposure is as far to the right as possible before blowing and then just peg it back a fraction. Having a lighter image to work with is far better than a dark on, especially when you increase your ISO.

Hope this helps John, you are getting some very nice opportunities.

    TFS
    Steve

The key to this shot for me is the light on the antlers which is beautiful. Therefore, if pixels allow, I'd go in a little tighter from the bottom of the frame, lower the BG highlights and maybe open up the shaded side of the face a touch.

Certainly a handsome chap and a great look at him 'down the barrel'

Steve "curves via saturation" I don't understand... is this a curves layer and a saturation layer adjusting one then the other to get the desired effect or is it a curves color layer - if so what is that?

Sorry Jon, because I'm on auto pilot I just write, but basically as I grew up with PS from then early 90's, I use the old ways of Alpha channels, Image > Calculation etc where I can make up non distinctive adjustments from RGB channels, you I think use more modern ways or Actions, but I can tailor aspects with the adjustment like saturation, levels etc...

Yes, a bit complicated for John I think at this stage, but achievable if he has time to explore.

Absolutely love the rich colours here and golden light, well seen and captured! Great techs, well exposed, well framed and lovely detail too. You processed this image very well John.

And Steve... your RP brings out those golden tones I never knew existed
Really enjoyed this, thank you both for OP as well as RP, such a pleasure to view

    Kind regards,
