I wanted a close-up of one of the day old loon chicks on its parents back so I put my 2x TC on and concentrated on the chick. There can be so many different things to shoot with a family of loons that it works well to focus on one aspect at a time. Chick portraits and adult head shots are easiest with longer glass and or a closer appraoach while feeding shots, family pictures and wing flaps are best done from a further distance and/or with a shorter lens.

Very cute and great timing. I like the angle, open bill, details and exposure control. Did you need a hide on the boat?

No hide needed. The loons are very tolerant and swim up to the boat with their chicks. We usu 3 trolling motors for better control of the boat and dont run the regular motor anywhere near them.

Lovely little guy. EXP and sharpness good. I would definitely crop from the left getting rid of about half of the visible primary (??) feather. This would get the bird out of the frame and result in better COMP with more emphasis on the little one.

Beautiful capture Cheryl! My only very small nit is the OOF strip of blue in the BRC.

I agree with Artie on the crop for this. Just a little too much feather sticking out. That said, I really like the intimate connection created here between the viewer and the chick. I think the crop would only enhance that.
