    Default Orange-crowned Warbler

I only had an hour of decent sunlight yesterday morning and this was the only bird that popped out of the brush for an opportunity. I presumed it was a female
Common Yellowthroat so I didn't bother taking a look right away. Once I got it up on my monitor I could tell it wasn't a Common Yellowthroat. I'm pretty sure the
ID is correct. I have no idea how common these are, but this would be my first image of this species. By all means correct me if I'm wrong...and ruin my day. I
know it's a little tight. This is full frame plus. I added some canvas in front and below from some other images in the sequence. The bird was close to minimum focal
distance. The front foot was actually OOF but I cloned in the focused foot from another image. Removed an OOF branch.

Nice image and sharp! The split-eye ring says orange-crowned. But there are no blurred streaks on the breast. The clear breast and the yellow edgings on the wing feathers (and the lack of blurring) point to yellow. And that is my general impression. I am sending this one to several folks who will know.

Thanks for the second photo. I am pretty sure that it is not a yellow or an orange-crowned. I need the date and the exact location.

    thanks and love, artie

Nice view of this warbler. Hopefully one of the experts will get some info on the ID. Nice pose and perch.

The split eye ring and yellow undertail covert suggest Orange-crowned to me, but I'm no expert. Nice images.

I'll go with Orange-crowned, but it is an awfully bright yellow one if that is what it is. If it wasn't so yellow on the wings then a young female Mourning warbler could have been possible, but who knows at this time of year!!

True, Orange-crowned's legs should not be pink. So Yellow and Mourning are possibilities. Looking forward to what replies you got :-)

This is why I need help. Although I'm not totally red/green color blind, I can't tell the legs are pink. After looking at a few more Orange-crowned Warbler
images, the beak does appear to be too stout. There are a lot of Yellow Warblers in this area. I would be inclined to think Yellow Warbler if it wasn't for
    such a distinct eye ring.

You are on the right track. Keep on driving.

Most of the good field guides have an image of a bird that fits this one perfectly ... More soon.

Thanks all for their patience. I wrote Richard Crossley and asked him Orange-crowned or Wellow? He shot back, "Nice photo. Neither - it’s a Mourning. " Then I wrote Jon Dunn, co-author of the Peterson Warblers guide. He kindly replied: I believe after some thought that your bird is an immature Mourning Warbler. Shape is right and it has a long bill. The yellow throat is brighter than on many. Take care, Jon

I posted it yesterday on the Advanced Bird ID FB page. Once it was approved, all of the responses were unanimous: first fall (hatch-year) mowa.

    with love, artie

ps: kudos to Dan who was the first one here to look at mourning ...

Woohoo. I was going to post this morning that I was going with Mourning as a final answer. I still have zero images of this species as it is just not a very cooperative one from my own experience.

You are very welcome. It was fun and I learned a lot. Mourning is a very good bird anywhere in the US so this turned out to be a best-case ...
