Obliging of the bird to use the prop provided! You've nailed your own critique about eye contact, maybe a bit of dodging might open them up a bit. Lovely light. A difficult pose to crop really unless you have the resolution to tighten it a bit more.
Nice light.
I feel there is too much empty space above but I think if you cropped it out the IQ would suffer.
Could you have gotten lower to get the green in the BG directly behid the bird?

Sweet situation. It is not so much eye contact as the fact that the bird's head is sort of lost in the legs. And yes, some head turn would likely have helped that ...
