A very young cub carefully investigates our presence in Masai Mara. He got bolder than the rest of the cubs and came with a few meters of our vehicle.

f/5.6 (Steve has suggested 5.6 over f/4 in an earlier post, well I have many frames so here is another one with the 100-400 II instead of the 500 II)

f5.6 vs f4 - depends on the magnification of the subject, here 5.6 looks Ok - but do you want the forefeet in focus? DOF is really a matter of preference were you intending to get the head, chest and forelimbs sharp or just the head, if the latter at this magnification f4 would have perhaps been better. Form my point of view my attention is firmly on the head and whiskers so I am not paying much attention at all to the rest of the cub.
processing and details look good but I still have some reservation over tonal contrast and very subdued colour. I appreciate there probably wasn't much colour there...but maybe a little more wouldn't hurt?

    Hello Sanjeev,

Another cutie of a cub, such adorable little face Very nice framing and POV is great, love the eye contact. Nice techs too, you've handled well the low light.

I would reduce contrast and lift shadows and blacks - but selectively on the nose and mouth only. And like Jon said, a bit more colour won't hurt, but it's up to you of course.

Very sweet capture and it gave me great pleasure to view, what an amazing trip you had and such lovely sightings - thank you for sharing with us!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Thanks Jon and Gabriela, I will re look at the image and try to add a bit more colour and lift some shadows on the face. I have a few more to share of different cubs. :-)

Hi Sanjeev another lovely little critter ....
DOF is fine for me , the contrast likewise ... for me no need to open up the shadows .
Just think the colours are a bit dull in the ground , not the subject . Those eyes are so cute .... one would like to dive into those .
Wondering if there is no finer detail to extract in the fur .... with the 5D at 6400 ISO .

What is that dark fringe on the cuties back end ????

    TFS Andreas

Very cute cub. Love the look at the face and those eyes. Colors do seem muted, but it does seem like it was pretty dark, so I'm fine either way. Love how small this one looks. TFS

Thanks everyone. Andreas, that seems to be a darkish patch of OOF grass, not cloning or any patch work done to the BG apart from NR to BG. The BG was 'clean'.

Hi Doc -- Indeed very cute, loved the low pov and the look in the camera. Agree with Andreas regarding the finer details, its get problematic at higher iso but i think 5D IV i better than the earlier model.

    Still a nice image.

Hi Sanjeev, I think both Jon & Andreas have raised a few good points. To me in low light I would favour the 1DX, but then if you are cropping the 5D is better. In addition you can push the 1DX, the 5D has a limit and again, the IQ at a higher rate I think the 1D has the edge.

To me the IQ isn't there and so you don't have the full data to work with and that might be from movement, Case settings, Camera/lens are slightly out, did you use single point or expanded and finally, how close? If it was far, then f/5.6, close f/8+, DoF button would have helped.

    TFS
    Steve
