    Hi all,

These wren made a nest at my folks house and were very busy foraging a couple weeks back when I was there. They were bringing in some great bugs -- from crickets (shown in a previous image), to spiders, to grubs like this, and even a wasp at one point. This image was taken in very low light, and compounded by the fact I had the shutter speed too high, I ended up at this astronomical ISO. The image was exposed far to the right and I thought the grub was so cool I processed it anyway. I think for what it is, it's decent. In post, corrected exposure, NR at RAW and then again in photoshop on both subject and BG, and cropped down to about 12 MPs. I got other headshots at much lower ISOs, but none with a prey item like this.

    Camera: Nikon D500
    Lens: 500mm f/4 + 1.4 TC
    Specs: 1/2000 f/5.6 ISO 28,800

Thanks for looking and commenting on prior posts!

    Woah...Really good for ISO 28,800.
I love the grub/caterpillar and I think your processing is spot on.
It is easy to be a backseat photographer but I bet if you could do this again you would have reduced that SS and ISO!

Love this shot Alex. I read your blog post and I have to say that the quality is great for such a high ISO. The grub really makes the image stand out. Obviously a lower ISO would've been ideal, but this is awesome nonetheless.

Impressive for iso-28,800. A lot of detail all considering. Good exposure. I like the grub and the fact that it's in focus along with most of the bird head. I think you could do a little work on the eye by lightening the iris and perhaps darkening some of the reflection.

What a grub this wren caught. The image quality looks very good for that very high ISO. Background is great. Pose on the bird is spot on.

In a second! I was kicking myself when I saw the techs but in the end would rather have this than not, so all worked out

Looks great considering the ISO. Still loads of detail where you want it! I agree the prey makes the shot and makes it worth keeping. The brown-on-green looks really nice.
