Female American wigeon from Vancouver Island, got this frame back in winter when the sun came out for a few hours

    Shot with the gripped D850, 500PF + TC14E-III ISO 640 f/5.6 at 1/3200 sec hand held. Processed with C1P 12

As noted before, this combo isn't great for flight but managed a few frames with it.

Great flight angle and background. The shadow doesn't help the image, IMO, but is sometimes unavoidable. I'm assuming you used Group Area AF? To my dismay I discovered that with the 500PF + 1.4 TC, the 3D AF setting is unavailable. I don't think you have been in the habit of using 3D, but I have found it very good at tracking BIF and was sorry that Nikon could not make it work with this combo. I'm speculating that 3D requires more light than that combo can provide.

I use Grp AF. I find that expansion AF works a bit better for this combo but still not usable for flight.

While The low end bodies such as the D850 and D500 both struggle mightily with this combo the D5 can still rock it so I am sure it is not purely a technical limitation

Thanks Arash. If I'm not mistaken, the 3D AF function does not work with the D5 and that lens combo. Could be wrong.

Bill, I do not use 3D AF. I was referring to Grp AF.

Like the way the bird is angling toward you. The background is nice and dark. The bird is tack sharp.

Very nice view of this lady, even with the shadow across the chest. The whole bird really pops on the dark BG.

As above, sharp with a killer dark BKGR.

Is this a new body? D8590

I am confused by several things. You wrote, I find that expansion AF works a bit better for this combo but still not usable for flight.

What do you mean by expansion AF?

Also, if you believe that the D5 is better with 500 PF/TC-E14 why were you using the D850?

    Hey Artie,

Expansion AF is one of the AF modes for Nikon cameras, similar to Canon cameras it uses a the center point and several points around it. I wasn't planning to shoot on that day... didn't have the D5 in my bag
