About a week ago on Flatey Island, Iceland with breaks between overcast, high winds, sleet, rain and snow, we were treated to moments like this if you were willing to sit still for over an hour. If you would so much as blink the parent would let out a quick call. Depending on the motion you would make the parent(s) would make a different call with varying lengths and volume of calls. C&C welcome.

D500, Sigma 150-600mm C @ 480mm, 1/1600s, f 6.3, ISO 2000. I was on a tripod, but due to the taller blades of grass plus depending on wind level, I would hand hold.

    Geoffrey:

Sounds like a challenging trip, weather wise. Glad that you got some rewards for your efforts.

I like the interaction between parent and chick, the soft light , grassy background.

I might try to tone down a few of the highlights on the rock in front of the adult, would reduce its impact on the image a bit.

You were fortunate to see as much as the feet as you did with that rock in the way!

    Cheers

Hi Geoffrey, terrific interaction you captured. I agree w Randy bout toning down the highlights in the FG. Any idea what the food was? Looks like a pistachio but i'd bet it wasn't a pistachio!

Lovely intimate interaction. Perfect EXP for blacks and whites and you did well to get just over the FG rocks with low angle to the view of this moment. I'd wait for an hour any day for this... TFS

Nice interaction between the adult and the chick. That tall grass can be a image killer. You did very well in this situation.

Nice work catching them both in the open. I guess the trick was tossing down a few pistachios. The chick would pop out of his hiding place at different locations, so I found it hard to position myself to get a clear shot like this one. Well done.

Thanks Ann. These birds like to dine on a variety of mollusks and as I watched the parents fly to a sandy based tide pool, dig around and come up with small morsels about this size, I can only think it was a small mollusk.
