This happens to be my first ever sighting of a Star-nosed Mole. As an added bonus, a Barred Owl had its bill wrapped around it as an offering to one of its owlets in a nearby nest. I did not see the owlets inside the nest, but was privileged to photograph one of them just off the forest floor once out. So cute!

I actually came upon this nest by surprise as I came around a corner, face-to-face with what you see here. The owl then flew a ways, so I followed it to where I thought it went. Found it, much higher in a tree, when along came another photographer who I proudly pointed out to that an owl was right here. "I know" he says with a grin, then adds if I had seen an owlet out of the nest. "What nest, and where?" was my first words...to which he replied, "right here" pointing to a cavity not twenty feet from where I was standing.

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/250s., f/5.6, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, full-frame, tamed a rather garish green cast, and removed an annoying stick from the tail to the bottom edge.

    Daniel:

Great story! Bad day for the mole however.
Nice catchlights, prey item, effective DOF with soft enough BG.

Glad it worked out so well.

Love the story and the image is awesome. Always difficult for me to point the camera into canopy with dappled lighter spots. Tell me how you handled that so well (like perfectly as usual) please... Love the view of the eyes. Looking forward to more in this series. TFS

Great story, great capture. Nice work on the exposure under tricky canopy conditions. The owl has an almost sad expression, as I suppose does the mole.

Terrific find and prey... to be picky, I might clean up the eye reflections a bit...

Very nice. The vertical composition works very well. The owl is perched perfectly on the tree. Of course the mole is a big plus. Nice pose and details as well.

Really nice! The eyes have a good catch light despite the shady spot he's sitting in, and the tree trunk and branches are a nice natural frame for the bird. And that does indeed appear to be a star-nosed mole, albeit one that has expired. Seems you lucked out!
