A big flock of Canadas had been feeding for several days last August in this harvested wheat field on Westham Is. on the Fraser R. delta in south west B.C. . With my farmer friend's permission I set up my old set of Canada field decoys in a spot where I could fit into good cover, with the late afternoon sun and the offshore westerly wind behind me. For more than an hour I had hundreds of these big birds landing directly in front of me anywhere from 10 to 60 yards out. Often the flocks would circle over me so close I could hear their feathers rattling. After landing they fed contentedly, gradually spreading out away from my location. Like the call of wolf or bull elk, the sound of Canada geese winging in to a landing stirs the blood like little else and it was a rare and special privilege to spend time in such close proximity to them.
