    Default Theme: landing Canada goose

A big flock of Canadas had been feeding for several days last August in this harvested wheat field on Westham Is. on the Fraser R. delta in south west B.C. . With my farmer friend's permission I set up my old set of Canada field decoys in a spot where I could fit into good cover, with the late afternoon sun and the offshore westerly wind behind me. For more than an hour I had hundreds of these big birds landing directly in front of me anywhere from 10 to 60 yards out. Often the flocks would circle over me so close I could hear their feathers rattling. After landing they fed contentedly, gradually spreading out away from my location. Like the call of wolf or bull elk, the sound of Canada geese winging in to a landing stirs the blood like little else and it was a rare and special privilege to spend time in such close proximity to them. The outstreched wings are great. Would like to see more detail in the head. The light was sure nice.

Hi Bob, this is very nice, I like in particular the blur in the wings, but you also have clarity, sharpness & detail elsewhere. I might crop some off the LHS to have uniformity here because of the pose. Contrary to what we have discussed I might add a tad more Shadow & some more midtone, but again, viewing on the laptop. Watch the sharpening halos around the head, but it's a vast improvement from the Bear.

Keep me posted on how you are doing. BTW is this along from Reifel as often in the winter time there are truck loads of Pink footed Geese in the fields.

Like the post. Wing stretch is really nice.

Something wrong with background (may be too much NR)

The bird looks great but I find the BG has a glassy texture to it- I wonder why.
Sounds like you had a wonderful opportunity.
Agree with taking a bit off LHS,

Thank you John and I agree with you about the head--sort of--on the one hand it id a dead-on straight ahead pose that the perfectly aligned head/neck accentuates---and on the other it is, of course, always nice to see some eye detail....this guy kept his gaze perfectly straight ahead right through the landing sequence ---some of the incoming shots have face and eye but not this wing position. The late evening light here on the Fraser delta is indeed spectacular and has given me some good sessions with the wavies too ( and no doubt you've seen it in some of Arash's SEOs too).

Thanks Steve---I had a long detailed reply typed out to you and when I tried to post the website timed out and my work was lost--don't have tome to redo but thinking it through to compose was the big help. Yes this is on the fields adjacent to Reifel and I've had many a good session with them there as well as out front on the salt marsh. Further to your email, Whistler is an old playground---I skied there the year it opened (1964 I believe ) until leaving skiing in 2005 and patrolled for a few years in the mid-seventies.

Glad you liked the shot Krishna. I didn't do any NR on the RP so not sure what you're seeing-- I don't think I see noise even at 1:1 on the OP image so not sure what the problem is.

Thanks Gail and here's an RP trimmed as suggested. Not sure what the problem that you and Krishna are seeing with BG is . I tried some NR and sharpening for the RP but it increased haloing of head/neck too much and it didn't make a significant enough visible change to be worth keeping. There's still some halo showing after doing as much as I could to reduce it with the chromatic aberration eyedropper and don't know what else I could do.

Bob, Haloing comes from too much sharpening, CA deals with fringing, quite often you will see blue, green or red fringes along the edge of the subject against a clear sky, CA will not address the halo Bob.

Bob, if you do a long reply type it as an email, but if you lost it, could you not have revisited the page as there is auto-restore enabled?

Gosh '64 we are going back , as I thought it was '67, however this will be our 25th season, hence why I can get a chance to do some snapping too whilst I'm out there.

Keep me posted on things as and when, but do it as an email.

Lots of helpful stuff above. What bugs me with this image despite the beautifully outstretched braking wings is the horizon line right through the neck ...
