    Default Sandbar Hanky Panky

Image #2: Royal Tern male mounting mate

This image was also created on April 20, 2019 , DAY THREE of the DeSoto Spring IPT. I used the hand held Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens and my souped-up Nikon D850. ISO 500. Matrix metering plus about 1 stop: 1/2000 sec. at f/6.3 was a bit underexposed. AUTO1 WB at about 7:15pm on then cloudy afternoon.

Nikon Focus Peaking fine-tune value: +3. See the Nikon AF Fine-tune e-Guide here.

Center Group (grp) AF/Continuous (C in Nikon/AI Servo with Canon) was active at the moment of exposure. The upper point of the array just caught the base of the spoonbill’s neck.

As for the image, don't be shy; all comments are welcome.

    Insanely good.. mating with fish.
Nice light, even the shadow looks soft and nice.
Blacks blocked which I don't care about, but some might.
Not sure how you would get any detail there anyway...
    Nice work.

Hi Artie, good to see you back posting. Very nice, sharp, great poses, view of both eyes. I would love to see your processed "Blacks w detail" as i am learning how beat to handle an underexposed image w blacks when i use my D850... Any tips, been rainy and cloudy so i'm stalled at 1600 ISO w my new rig... This is the 3rd week! Thanks, and typo or trick, the royals are not spoonies!

Nice view of both. The fish is great. The full wing spread on top is lovely. Classic desoto image.

Yes, switcharoo for me, I have the 850 and newest 600mm In coma line for the 500mmPF, adding a D5. Sorry for the confusion, i was asking for you to post the frame after you adjust the blacks and whites for detail... I know you underexposed so i was asking to see what you get because i have been doing only underexposures and trying to perfect the details both in blacks and whites when i process... Third week of new gear and consistent iso's 1600, 2000. Haven't been able to shoot a single bird in flight yet for lack of light!

Hmmmm.... I thought the D850 was famous for its dynamic range but here, the whites look too bright on the breast and throat and the blacks are blocked. You say the image was underexposed so the whites must have been OK in the RAW. Not quite sure what happened in PP to make the whites so bright.
Love the fish in the mouth and the raised foot and low POV. Sharpness and DOF are spot on.
Very nice that all 3 eyes (terns + fish) are clearly visible.
I like it all but for the whites.
I would tidy up the bottom LLC- I think I see some cloning artifacts and that little pebble on the edge could go.
