    Default Virginia Rail.

I had not photographed this species in a few years, so I made it a point to go to a local spot that I know of their presence. This Virginia Rail is standing on a narrow foot path that cuts between marshes on each side. Some audio of this species' call enticed one to come out and make its presence seen. A fun outing!

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/640s., f/5.6, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, FF, darkened the brighter highlights along the grass line.

Great frame. One of the best rail photos i have seen. Like the water in the open bill. The vertical framing works very well. Nice one.

Beautiful Daniel ,would like to see a little more space in the rear. Just a personnel preference.Open bill and water add some interest.Love all the colors.

love the pose and the details Dan, wish we could see the feet but the FG blur is quite nice, I also like the small drop of water caught in its bill

Daniel: Ditto the +ve comments by others here. Having the feet visible would be a bonus, but it's not a deal breaker. Love that water droplet. You always remind me what the 7Dii is capable of (even though I still only have the 100-400) TFS

Exquisit Dan, especially with the water droplet. Can see a vision with less above and darkening the FG for some additional layering.

    Woah, this is nice!
IQ is wonderful, that soft diffuse light is beautiful and the little drop in the bill is the icing on the cake.
I love the BG and FG colors.
For my taste I would take a bit off the top.
Agree that seeing the feet would make this better but it is such a pretty image that I don't mind not seeing the feet.
This image gives me hope for us Canon shooters!!

Hi Dan, this is simply gorgeous! Love the pose, the water drop in the beak, the details and soft light. Nice BG. Ideal world, we should have seen the feet but this time it doesn't matter much at all.

I like it Dan, soft, sharp, and the between the beak item leaves me curious! Very nice!
