    David:

Soft morning light, good view of the eye, often a challenge with preening, good shooting angle.

Good choice of f stop to increase dof. That is a real challenge in this type of pose.

For me, probably more negative space than really needed to tell the story. I would probably try a version with a modest amount off the top and bottom.

    Cheers

Nice low angle on this guy, so kudos on that. You might tone the hot areas down a bit, and I agree there is too much space around the bird. Given your apparent distance, stopping down probably didn't gain you more DOF than the increased noise cost you in terms of resolution. I only worry about closing down for more DOF when I'm right on top of the subject.

I agree a little tighter would look good...Very nice mood to the frame. Lovely colours. I would fix the hot white at the top of the leg, it did draw my eye. Well done

I hear you my friend. I was not closed down for DOF, it was because this old glass combo requires one full stop to get tack sharp images. So, predawn I have to live with the loss of some detail. But only until I get some RF glass in the telephoto range. Come on Canon, hurry up...
Thanks as always for your valued inputs.
    Peace,
    David

Yes to some sort of crop. In a perfect world the head of a preening bird would be parallel to the back of the camera; something to note and strive for.

The light looks nice. Like how you have good view of the eye. Low angle is another plus.
