Default Great Blue Heron silhouette at sunrise

    Attached Images Attached Images

This image was created on the morning of April 18, 2019 on DAY ONE of the DeSoto Spring IPT. I used the hand held Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens and my souped-up Nikon D850. ISO 500. Matrix metering minus about 1/3 stop: 1/1250 sec. at f/6.3 AUTO1 WB at about 7:11am on a clear day.
Nikon Focus Peaking fine-tune value: +3. See the Nikon AF Fine-tune e-Guide here.

One up from center Group (grp)/Continuous (C in Nikon/AI Servo with Canon) AF was active at the moment of exposure. The array was centered on the top of bird’s neck right below the chin.

To learn more about the creation of this image and see a version created a minute later when the sun was obscured by a cloud, see the "How to Get a Wet Muddy Butt That Might Ruin the Rest of Your Day ... Or Not!" blog post here.

As for the image, don't be shy; all comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

I like it... A bit large in the frame but total blackout which is what I prefer with silhouettes.
I like the BG, is it a reflection?

Love the bold warm colors but mostly like the "opaque" mask of the GBH... mysterious, intriguing, and **** cool!

Nice color in the water. The composition is nice. Suprised you didn't make the bird solid black.

Love the entire BG, the easy to identify portrait outline, the view of eye and especially the rim light through those crest feathers. TFS

Artie, feels like summer, nice silhouette and you can still make out the eye. Nice feather details on the back of the head and great orange BG.

It is the reflection of the rising sun in the water, thankfully soft.

My favorite part is the light filtering through the raised head feathers. Cool!

Very nice. I like the hint of the eye coming through the dark silhouette and the light through the crest.
