    Default Wood Duck (f) Two

Another frame of this very cooperative subject, but this time I just wanted to see how far I could push the ISO on 5D4, this is at 10k ISO with still more to go. They do have this green tinge to the top of the head too.

Thanks to those who posted or viewed on the last posting.

Love this. The fast fall off of DOF goes well with those feathers and the head is killer clear. BG also lovely. OK, some questions; 1.)What do you mean by 10k and still more to go on ISO. Are you using NI. 2.)are you using ACR for raw conversion and do you have an opinion on ACR vs DPP?

Hi David, what I meant was, the shot was taken at ISO 10,000 and there was still more ISO to go if I required, without too much loss of IQ. I will happily push the 1DX MKII's to their limits knowing what I can get from the file and how to process it, but in the past when testing the 5D4 it's always been at far more reserved ISO speeds ie 3200.

are you using ACR for raw conversion and do you have an opinion on ACR vs DPP?
It's in the into David , my preferred choice is LR. Over the years I have used C1, DPP & ACR but just prefer LR for the 'Global' adjustments and PS for the 'Refinements', as I have been using LR since 2006 and PS since 1995, eek, so I'm fairly comfortable using the software, but it's all personal preference.

The DOF immediately draws the eye to the head of the bird, even though it is further back...The detail for ISO 10,000 is amazing. You can easily tell where the critical focus point is...How far was you from the bird....Well done Steve, looking good.

Approx 7-8m Will from memory, but it all comes back to maximising the capture and avoiding ramping the Blacks and Contrast and keeping PP to a minimum, but as I have stated before, maximising the midtones. The real 'art' of processing is knowing what to leave out and to treat each image on it's own merits.

Steve, technically i.e. processed very well indeed, colours and details look beautiful, as an image though, mmm the head is great, but I am not keen on the cropped body. (I appreciate you are concentrating on the head, that is not lost on me).

Nice detail. Looks great for the high ISO. The pose is nice. Like the color on the wing. You must have been close to this lady.

Thanks folks, Jon what would you suggest in an alternative crop? BTW heading up to the Moors today.

As I said earlier John, 7-8m.

    Cheers

I would have tried not to crop, i.e. get an image of the whole bird.

    Steve:

Excellent capture of the subtle colors of this hen. They often get overlooked because the drakes are so bold looking.

    Nice ISO performance.

How much of the body do you have? It is always a fun exercise to figure out the best crop, and as we experienced with my last wood duck series, lots of differences of opinion on that one.

Hope your outing (yesterday?) was productive as well.

    Cheers

Guys the image is almost FF all bar the shouting. Getting all of the subject I felt wasn't worth it Jon, mainly because of the crap environment, so it was more of a detail capture Jon.

Yes Randy, productive I think, will have to wait until I'm back in just over a weeks time to start to edit & process. Getting out whilst the weather improves and before the 'world & his wife' hit the roads, as we have a few days holiday over Easter.
