I really like Green Herons but they only tend to fly around my
ponds really early or really late.
This was at daybreak.

Hi Dan, color on the heron looks off, greens look too yell/blue/turquiose... Big crop, details look smooth. BG looks terrific if some area didn't have such a hard edge...
You did decently given less-than-ideal lighting conditions. ISOO 4000 smoothed out most of the fine details as Ann noted. Color does seem a bit off, but I find getting color right under these filtered sun-type conditions really hard. There's just so much light bouncing around and picking up casts from every direction.....
Colors are pretty accurate for the Herons in my pond.
unprocessed RAW file.
D500 set to neutral.
BTW, shooting against that background in iso4000 light the D500 and the 300 f2.8
got 10 sharp frames and these Herons are not slow!
Camera is remarkable...

Bird is nice and sharp. Also like the pose and the background.

sweet shot Dan good job with handling of high ISO the original colors look pk to my eye, you can slightly bump up the saturation
