    Default Blue Streak ...

    Attached Images Attached Images

Sandhill Crane, adult head and neck portrait

This image was created at Indian Lake Estates on March 18, 2019. I used the hand held Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens and my back-up Nikon D850.. ISO: 500. Matrix metering at zero: 1/2000 sec. at f/6.3 in Manual mode. Auto1 WB at 5:4y pm.
One up and to the right of center Group AF was active at the moment of exposure. The array was on the very top of the bird’s neck just below and behind the bird’s cheek.

To learn more about the creation of this image and learn why my quads hurt for two days, check out the blog post here.

"Pop!" Whoa Artie, detail magnificantooooo I saw the detail on the head on the thumbnail and i was hooked! I love the bold colors and that cherry red tomato eye. An afternoon looking at Nikon gear, prices, etc, ... Excellent timing!

I like the colors and the background is nice. I do not like that that only the head is sharp and the rest of the bird is out of focus. I know you alway say that if the eye is sharp then to **** with the rest of the bird but this one does not work for me. Different perspectives I guess. Also for me the beak is too close to the edge of the frame and seems cramped.

If you can pull it off, I would do a square instagram crop of the top of the frame.
Just screen scroll it an see...perfect.
Excellent detail on the head and very cool colors.

I see what Isaac about out of focus body.

I like the blue color in the image which elevates the image.

I like that I can see hole in the nose as well.

All in all I like the image. Interesting to know why you shot this at f/6.3 rather than stopping it down.

    Thanks

Artie. I love everything about this image, although I do feel there needs to be more room left of the beak. That BG is awesome!

Looks good to me. Head and eye sharp. colors and background wonderful. I like the birds head withing the blue area. The tall crop works well, whatever is out of focus leads the viewers eye to what you want them to look at. Thank you for sharing, Artie.

Impressive detail, perfect light, and sharpness spot on where it needs to be - kind of what one would expect from you Maybe slightly more space in front of the bird?

The pose and light are nice. Really like that background with the blue streak. Im suprised by how tight the bird is on the left side of the frame.

This is a fun and unique frame because of the background, but I agree the bird needs more DOF and more room into which to look on the left.

Love the head entirely in the blue (assume this is reason for sore quads) right down to blue through the nostril. The sharpness is right where it needs to be (can't remember where I learned that) and I like the composition as is. Why? You come into the frame from the bottom right and move to that wonderful eye. With this composition that puts that journey on a strong diagonal. More on the left and that is gone. For a portrait I like it as is.

Love the colours in this one, no issue at all with the blue streak from me as its well placed within the frame. No problem either with the focus fall off but I do wish for a little more negative space in front of the bird

nice head shot Artie, sharp with good details. I also like that the head fall right inside the blue band, I also wish the neck was in focus
