The sun had just burnt off most of the early morning fog, leaving a slightly diffused morning sun, as we watched a group of Northern Shovelers floating around in the calm south channel at Brigantine. It took a bit of waiting to isolate this drake from his kin.

Lovely image, Bill. The calm water and color on the duck make the image. Nice position of the duck and head angle are just about perfect. Thank you for sharing.

    Bill:

I really like Shovelers, such a distinctive bill, makes them look comical.

Good shooting angle, eye contact, smooth water.

The whites on the flank check out ok, about 235 or so, but I am not seeing much detail there. Did you need to bring them down in post? You might be able to tease out a bit of detail with Nik Detail extractor.

To my eye, the head is just a tiny bit soft, so might add a bit more sharpening there.

    Cheers

Brig is a tough place to shoot anything. I was there all day Saturday chasing the Gyrflacon which I saw but did not get a photo of. I like the image design and calm water. Pretty good pose and eye contact. The raised shooting angle helps here to get the reflection but as you do not have a perfect glass like reflection I am not sure it adds much. Like Randy I am not seeing a whole lot of fine feather details.

You were at the right height to capture the reflection. Nice pose and light.
