Default Bonding Behavior Great Blue Herons

I have a love/hate relationship with rookeries. Plenty of action but so hard to get a nice clean BG. I was pleased to find these 2 herons nesting high up on the rookery, allowing for a clean BG.

Fab action image. That you have the rookery environment in the lower image, and the clean background for the heads is perfect. The attitude of all the feathers says it all.

I feel the same about rookeries. I do not like the shots from them for the most part. There is a killer rookery by me that allows for perfectly clean backgrounds if you ever want to come down. Action here is great, the looks on their faces is great, the head plumes are great, background is pretty good as well. The heads of both birds are softer than the necks and appear to be slightly out of focus or out of the depth of field. I would try some detail extractor on the heads at mayne 25% or another round of sharpening on the heads using smart sharpen at 80 and .3 and see if that helps. So hard on this as the birds are leaning away from you and creating a depth of field nightmare.

Getting the heads clear of everything makes this work well.
Poses are funny and the birds are sharp enough....

Looking good Gail....Not an easy shot. I love the feather detail on the necks. The BG looks good. Fab facial expressions.

Agree completely about the shooting issues at rookeries. Don't have to worry about it in CA since there aren't any!

The interaction here is off the charts, and the plumes on both birds are really lovely. Focus on left bird isn't perfect but I think the action is enough to carry the image. You were in a tough aperture spot: Open to get the birds or close to lose the BG!

I like the poses, ruffled feathers, details and composition. You did well under challenging conditions.

plumes and interaction with a fab BG and just enough tops of the bush in either side to anchor the image. No noise in the BG, well done. Interesting entwined neck plumes and the position of the beaks with one open and one closed adds more interest, a winner!

Nice interaction. The details are very nice. The bird on the right is one of the better looking great blues i have seen.

Very cool Gail and awesome that you got both of their heads in the distant BG. Interaction and techs look great too. Well done
