    Default morning spoonie

Just back from a fun Florida trip with Gail B. Despite the noticeable lack of birds, this presented other opportunities with pay-offs. This image was taken after the drop off into the water off James Shadle's boat. This spoonie was flying away from the mangroves and gave a BG which I love.

Lovely capture! The light really makes those pink colors pop. Classic and winning combination against that green in the background. Great wing position as both the wings are also evenly sunlit. A slight headturn would have been nice but you still have some eye contact here. I don't see much details on the head and the feather detail seems a bit soft but that might be due to downsizing as the image appears sharp otherwise. There is also a artificial line on the chest after you darkened the whites on the head and neck(?). Easy fix though!

Thanks Ivan, I selected whites and inversed to lightened the bird... I see the faint line now, thanks. Went back to PS and scratched that idea all together, added a bit more sharpening.

I like the wing position but it is a tad oversaturtaed on my screen. Head looks crunchy without detail unfortunately (looks like critical focus was on the feet?) and it is angled away from us too a bit. Not a keeper for me

Exposure and colors look perfect to me. I love the green background that really makes the bird stand out. Do wish for a better head angle but always a reason to go back! As for the adjustment you made it is very difficult on a bird like this as there is not an abrupt change in color but there is more of a gradual transition. If you are going to do that type of an adjustment try a large feather of 7-10 pixels (when you have your selection done just hold down SHIFT and hit F6 and then enter the amount of the feather) and try and be as precise as possible with your selection. Then when you inverse and do your adjustments just make sure that the transition point is not apparent. If it is you could always do a bit of cloning to smoothen out that line and blend the areas back together. Let me know if you have any questions. Always happy to help.

The pink and the green go great togther. Nice pose as well. I can see why you like this background.

Beautiful light and background. I'm personally fine with the pose, and would be happy with this.

I like the BG, wing position and composition. I have yet to get a decent Spoonbill image. Thanks for sharing Ann.

Very well done Ann. When you do a selection, make sure you feather it if needed. I just go to select on the top bar of photoshop, scroll down to modify, then feather then a pop up comes up asking you to input the # of pixels you want to feather.
Head looks perfectly sharpened to me and I love the full wingspread.Pinks look great.

It's a keeper for me. Here is another trick for dealing with transitions: add a regular Layer Mask and erase the edges at 33-50% ,..

The warm light and color are wonderful, Ann! Sharpness looks much better in the repost. Background is slightly busy for me, but I'm often overly committed to super clean negative space. I think it hurts me at times. The underwing detail is super as well.
