I love my 8 FPS.
You need the battery pack and EN-EL4 or AA batteries to get to that frame rate.

I also find using the battery pack improves handling, it has the same controls for Vert shooting as Horizontal.

Actually, somebody has found a way to take advantage of D300's bracketing ability to shoot 8fps without the battery grip. Once everything's set, to take the pics, choose release mode S (single frame), press the shutter release button while holding down the Fn key to shoot. Unlike using the battery grip, this method takes 9 frames every time you press the shutter release and stop when all 9 frames are taken.
