These guys can be crazy tame, and this individual allowed a close enough approach to create a few nicely detailed portraits as it twirled seeds around its tongue. They crush berries to get to the seeds inside, leaving the fruit pulp behind, hence their more often than not messy appearance.

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/13, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, about 75% FF, some eye work.

    Hello Daniel,

Excellent detail on this portrait. Lovely colors on both the bird and the background. TFS.

Excellent Details in the bird. I like the background as well.

You got really close as well. Did you put some seeds etc or they generally allow you to come this close ?

These birds are not generally that tame in Utah unless its a backyard feeder setups...

Looks great. Not often that you see portraits of small birds like this. Love that background.

    Thanks guys!!

Krishna, these guys were hanging out in ornamental crabapple trees in a local park and couldn't care less about the presence of people. So fun!

Hey Isaac, I understand man...just switch to Canon and this can all be possible!

Beauty for sure! The soft pink BG is perfect. You must have right on top of these guys for f/13 to yield such great detail and smooth BG.

I've only shot these guys once. They were gorging on berries and I was able to roll right up on them. It was fun.

Really, really good Daniel! Alert pose with good eye contact, great BG and beautiful details. Interesting to see the tongue too!

They did not appear to be. Although very approachable they were quite alert and flighty whenever the presence of a raptor or shrike appeared. I hope to one day witness that condition with berry-eating birds, I've heard that waxwings are especially susceptible to that.
