So I REALLY like bird portraits, and I am going to use this months theme to share a few of mine with you.

I'll start with some common birds and build to some rarer and more colorful species later in the month.

Here is a super detailed winter plumage Black-bellied Plover from Malibu, California over Xmas to get
    it rolling.

Wonderful, wonderful details in the feathers.
    A textbook excellent portrait.
Aren't you supposed to be in New Zealand? (and not on BPN)

I'm a big fan of portraits such as this, and highly enjoy creating them whenever the chance presents itself. I especially get pumped up when a shorebird permits it! This one has it all for me, except for a bit more room above.

Man I do not know what it is with these birds in other parts of the country. Around New York City they never ever let you get even remotely close to them. I have had a grand total of 1 bird that allowed semi close approach in my entire life of birding in New York. Sorry for the rant, this one just makes me super jealous

Beautiful details and light. I think the colors on the bird are a little thin and would benefit from increasing the blacks. These birds have a bit more of a scaled and well defined pattern on them that would be more evident with an increase in contrast or blacks. I would also prefer more room above.

Wow Dorian this is great. Like Isaac, I rarely can get close to these birds. I had an okay sighting in Cape May last year but still a bit too far and the pics were underexposed at ISO 6,400 so not my best work. I'd love to get a shot like this. Great light, details, catchlight and pose. Love the eye here. TFS

I love the brightness and sharpness of this image: superb, and the image design is perfect as well.

I wish that someone would explain to me what a bird "portrait" is. I am doing this for 45 years and have no clue.

Yes, portrait in indeed an amorphous definition, but to me it means headshot.

For me portrait also means a tight close-up as we have here, sometimes even tighter such as my YCNH.

Thanks guys. To me a portrait is a picture, thus my confusion :)
