I have many images of the Rufous, some good, some not so good I decided to see just how close I could get. The first attempts were with a 100mm macro at a distance of about 8-10", but the camera sounds made the birds "jump" a little. So this year I tried a longer lens with and extension tube.....about 4'. The downside was it was raining most of the time so I had to use ISO1000.

Hi Wally, ISO 1000 look pertty good here. I'd work on the eye a little bit, Artie's methos, lightening the Iris and darkening the pupil, you'd probably want to remove the landscape off his eye if it is something you do. Pretty good DOF for f/9, althogh it sort of diasppers on the bir'ds outline.

Love the green BG in this case :)

Excellent Wally Fully agree with Fabs Glad you took advantage of the clean ISO and cranked it up I'm sure the rain was a blessing... might lighten the image just a tad !!!

    Hi Wally,
For me I would have preferred a bit more DOF but considering you were at ISO 1000...............not much more higher you could go. I have used ISO1600 on the Mark3 with good succes but you do have to apply noise ninja or something similar.

Thank you Fabs. Believe it or not I did play with the eye, not something I normally do because its not a detail one see's live. I have had one on my hand and I can barely make out the color even then. Basically, to me, they look black. Softness of the edge of the bird was probably me attempting selective sharpening etc.

Weather conditions were not favorable as it was extremely dull and raining. Cool too. I had better success last year in bright sun, but then the gorget became a major problem.

Way cool with the gorget so large. I am fine with the dof but the image as presented is dull. Fill flash would have made this outstanding but digital is amazing in what we think of as crappy light with good image optimization skills.

Would love to hear opinions on the re-post.

Looks much better....more life in it. Must be my old eyes getting to me, Everything I seem to produce these days seems dull. Fill flash I think would have blown the gorget. Mind telling me what you did?

    Thanks, Wally

Wow..........in the re-post the gorget (never heard it B4 today)....simply explodes off the screen. The iridescence really comes through as does a noticable improvement to the eye & BG.

    Hi Fernando,

Pretty much the standard adjustments covered in Digital Basics: Levels, Curves, and Hue-Saturation. A bit fancier I selected the pupil with a QM and darkened it a bit and then selected the iris in the same manner and lightened it.

Thanks for asking a good question!

Yes, Walter, you did do a bit of work on the eye from what I saw yesterday, but the iris could perhaps use a bit more lightening.

I think the gorget is too red now. May be just my monitor.

Then I start to lose any detail that is there. As I said before, up close and personal with all the hummingbirds I have met, one can barely make out the iris. And this includes having them on my hand. Guess I am just not fully convinced this is correct.
