    Default the need for speed...

Bundled up in search for winter ducks along the icy ocean today, and came across several red breasted mergansers. Not much flight action at all , but I watched to see if i could notice any "preflight" behavior. I couldn't determine any behavior prior to flight at all. I was sitting on this duck (haha) when it exploded and here is a frame in that take-off. The head on this female is smooth and darker bc of the water on it. I increased shadows and sharpened, NR, cropped, hope you like it.

I like the way she was coming at you. No Shadows really helps the image. Water splash add to the image.

    Nice Sharp eye as well.

    Well done.

SH right where it needs to be (love the eye). Love the "coming right at you" pose with wings up and that water. TFS

Very good indeed, I agree tricky little blighters to catch at take off but you did it very well indeed. Focus looks very good, I suspect the speed at which things take place did not permit a slightly lower angle.
I keep looking and wondering if the image is just a little on the cold side???? Maybe just warm it a little??

Pretty cool Ann, well captured...Fabulous pose and a great frame of a bird that's difficult to get close to. Maybe a wee bit more on the bottom, if you have it.

Like the incoming pose and the splashing water. Looks sharp right where it should be.

Looks pretty sharp on the face. What AF mode did you use? Which point was selected? Is this a substantial crop?

Great action with perfect eye contact, well done Anne! Wing pose and splashes are fantastic. Working with wings all the way up can make for wonky crops, but the proportioning is really good here.

Great action- it is very hard to get a tack sharp head of an incoming bird.
The color of the mergie seems brownish compared to the Nova Scotia mergies. Ours are more grey.
    Well done,
    Gail

Hi Artie , this is about 60% of the file, AF mode settings were -2, 0, +1. I never expected a flight shot and was tracking the duck as it moved towards me, center point.

  11. Thanks Arthur Morris thanked for this post

Fantastic image, you did well to keep the head sharp! Maybe a tiny bit more space below?
