Default A Rather Pale Common Redpoll

For a moment I thought I had a Hoary Redpoll seeing how pale this fella is, but upon further scrutiny the streaking is too thick and the bill/forehead is just not "Hoary-like" enough. In any regards, I had a lot of fun photographing a flock of redpolls foraging for food in the fresh and clean snow. I may have thrown some seeds in strategic areas as well .

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1000s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, small crop for comp, S/H on the snow to bring out the faint texture (images of the session were exposed with almost all the snow blinking on the camera LCD), darkened the pupil, reduced a bluish cast via Hue/Saturation.

Hi Dan, pale but very mighty! Love the stance, great colors on him, and I like the faint texture of the snow and the clean BG. I bet you had fun as they are small, colorful, and quick. Well done Dan.

I love redpolls and this is a sweet pic of one. Captures their essence perfectly. Nice details as always Dan. Only thing I would change is that I would run Arties detail extractor/tonal contrast recipe on the snow at 25%. I think it would really bring out a bit more of the subtle textures and add a touch more depth.

What a pretty bird. Lovely shot in such even light. Almost looks like the bird is not standing on anything.

Really like the pose on this bird. Also the high key look is very pleasing to the eye.

Ditto the positive comments. What a great looking bird! Love the pose, HA and colours. What would you have to have done to get the back foot more in focus? Great to see at least one other using the 7Dii. Not thinking Nikon/Sony??

Thanks a stack guys! I was already stopped down a full stop, but I am OK with the oof far foot. I still love my 7DII and have no plans to change to Nikon/Sony anytime soon. I do know and believe the reports of those systems, but I am still OK and happy with Canon for now. I came back from a family vacation recently, using only 7DII and the first version of the 100-400....according to many internet experts I should have come back with zero good images with that combo but I did more than fine IMO :-)

Hi Daniel... shows that it's the photographer that makes an image not the gear he/she has. Cheers!
