    I took this picture today at a place 20 minutes from my home. It was a cloudy day and I wanted to try out the things I learned at the Chris Dodds workshop that I attended At Bonaventure Island. The proper use of my handheld light meter (sorry Artie), the manual controls of my flash and post processing in Photoshop.

    Flash Used Yes 1/1 with Better Beamer
    Focal Length 500 mm
    Exposure Time 1/320 sec
    Aperture f/6.3
    ISO Equivalent 400
    Lens 500mm F4 IS

    In my opinion yes, the removal of the in focus grass behind the head is a great improvement

    Nice portrait of this guy John. The version with the OOF grass is nice--the only I could add is since herons often stand still for long periods of time was to have photographed a few shots wide open at f/4.

    Steve, yes Herons usually stay still, but this guy was on the move and I wanted the shot while he was in the tall grass.
