This is one from my usual spot at a nearby Glen. I arrived as it was dark, to find the heather covered in ground frost. After the sun came up, I saw this bird huddled into the heather.... As it was enjoying the morning light, I managed to get close enough to get a few shots with some frost still on the back of the bird.

Happy Hogmanay, and All the Best for 2019.

Nice frame of this grouse. The frost is a plus. Like the head turn.

The frost and the bird are just so pretty. This is such an impressive bird. The dark area in the background that cuts through the head is a real bummer as the rest is so cool (cold).

Nice one Will I like it very much. I could also see an alternative with more exposure applied to the grouse.

The environment and frost on the bird make this a really nice image. Head may be a bit soft compared to the wing, but it may also just be because of downsizing.

Nice habitat, head angle. The belly is a bit dark due tot he light angle, but at least the face is nicely splashed by the sunlight. There is a bit of softness at the tip the bill that looks a bit odd to me. Nice overall!

I like the frosty setting, early light and composition. The black line in the BG is unfortunate. Nice image Will.

Hi Will, like the setting and overall early light, but I feel it could benefit from the 'darks' being less dark, it just needs a tweak to bring out more detail and definition in the plumage.

There is a bit of softness at the tip the bill that looks a bit odd to me.
Dan, I bet it's movement in the bill, bet it had, or just started calling, having some more SS would have nailed it, forget the ISO here Will, you could have easily upped to 2500.

Beautiful bird and setting, but the underexposure is an issue. Wish he was facing the other way. Sharpness is almost perfect. There seems to be a bit of noise which is odd for ISO 1000 on that body.

Hi Guys, thanks for the comments...much appreciated. The image was underexposed, not by much, but enough...I had to raise exposure and shadows on the bird, more than I normally would. That is probably where the noise is coming in Dorian...At 1/1000 I thought I had enough Steve, but, I get your point. I do have some images of the bird facing the sunlight, which I will post later... I was thinking of...showing the 'frost on the birds back', whilst processing this one....

    Thanks for looking

    Will

Hi Will, to me you adopt the same principal here as when shooting subjects in snow. IMHO the metering was simply fooled by the situation, therefore you need to think differently and where you meter.

  13. Thanks William Dickson thanked for this post

There is nothing that processing can do to make this much better. It is solely the wrong light angle. I know it isn't always possible but you needed to be 20ft to your right to line up the sun. Still a nice image of a beautiful Grouse. Happy New Years to you
