    Default White-bellied Sea Eagle

    Attached Images Attached Images

Just returned home from a fantastic two week trip to Australia. It was my first time in Oz and it was a family vacation so I tried to get in as much photography in as I could in between the sights.
After a few days in Sydney we flew to Adelaide to meet my good friend and BPN member Ian McLachlan.
Ian and his beautiful wife Janet were fantastic and gracious hosts and they treated us to 4 great days in their area. The first spot we went to was an Island not far off the coast called Kangaroo Island. After exploring the islands sights and wildlife the first day, we got up early the next morning and Ian had a beautiful 65' boat chartered that he has used before to shoot Sea Eagles from. We cruised along the shoreline looking for Eagles along the cliffside with our binoculars, then once one was spotted, we threw out a frozen/thawed fish for the eagle. I couldn't believe it but the eagles would see the fish from was much as a half mile out and start heading our way.
It was a little tricky shooting from a rocking boat, especially with the eagle coming in fast and the boat moving trying to get in the right position as the eagle made its final stoop to catch the floating fish.
I got quite a few nice images but this one is one of my favorites as it shows off the nice wing details and the fish is in a pretty nice position too. It was shot pretty early in the morning, hence the nice soft warm light. The ones I got an hour later were great, but they didn't have this same look to them.
Thank you so much Ian for an awesome adventure down under!! My family and I had a awesome time with you guys!!

Thanks as always for looking and for your input. I appreciate it.

    Thanks Tim!!
I forgot to mention that even though I don't do setup photography to often, this was a ton of fun to do, and it isn't a total easy shot to get. Lots of variables ruined quite a few other opportunities we had so I was pretty stoked to come away with a few nice ones.
    Thanks again

Welcome back! I am really looking forward to your Ozzie images. I love Kangaroo Island. My second favorite place in Australia after the Great Barrier Reef. We were there in 1995 when there were only 2 motels on the island. Very remote and very pristine. I loved it and was blown away by the wildlife there. I imagine it must be a lot busier now.
    Your image is great.
Love the exposure on the whites and the fact that the fish is looking the "right way".
Tack sharp and I love the deep blues of the ocean.
    Looking forward to more!

Thanks Gail!! I don't think Kangaroo Island has changed to much. Still pretty remote and only a few places to stay. We loved it and Laurie wants to go back and just stay there for a week!

Super WOW David. Love the details overall. What a great looking bird, and you captured it perfectly. The blue coldness of the sea makes the warm light on the bird look real good. Lovely flight pose and HA. Very nice....You could have come to the Isle of Mull in Scotland, and throw fish from a boat, only plain Sea Eagles here though Yes I must say it is a great experience photographing them from a boat...Not easy. Very well done and TFS.

This is just great Dave. Like we talked about, getting a super photo is really really hard. Set ups take tons of work and knowledge, as does anything else. It all lined up here perfectly. Great details, pose and the snack is a major plus.

Yeah David, this is smoking! Everything is perfect - the eye contact, light, pose, details, etc etc. I like shooting set-ups every once in a while. We have to work so **** hard for frames in CA - particularly
in the most heavily urban areas - that having the birds come to us for a change is nice!

Just got home from the outback and saw David's gem. Perfect. We loved having the Salems down here and luckily the Sea Eagles behaved quite well on the day we went out to sea .I don't think ,unlike say Ospreys ,that you could fluke getting near enough to frame one of these beautiful birds unless you gave them a feed because the chances of getting the light right and the food within 30 meters is about zero. They kill and eat everything from possums to wallabies and any sea creature that makes the mistake of getting near the surface. And range for miles out to sea.
We are looking forward to what comes next out of his trip to Oz. Or maybe the next one!

Fantastic angle for both raptor and fish. Great BIF capture. The stopped water dropplets really add a lot. And nailed the focus. We get these here they are a wonderful Bird of Prey. Glad to here you enjoyed Australia.

Hi Dave, no matter where you are, or what you capture through your lens, you nail each subject perfectly. Brilliant exposure and sharpness, and well timed for the action shot.

What a shot! The fact that you can see the eye of the fish adds a lot. Great wing position, exposure and IQ!
