Handheld, taken from a pontoon boat on our lake in Maine on a flawless, summer morning after having ample time to study his habits and get fairly close to his perching selections. I am not entirely convinced of the ID, absent the eye-ring and the darker wing-bars. So if anyone has another lead, please pass it on, with my appreciation.

Image quality on the bird looks alright. Wish the bird was higher in the frame and more to the right. Really pushing that ISO for the markII.

In Artie's word, filtered light and the strong shadows is an image wrecker. the image has a very strong green cast too

Welcome Dave. And thanks a stack for your membership support. All Good stuff above but the image is sharp and the IQ is excellent. While I do hate filtered light this one is almost spotlit on the head. For the repost: worked on the color balance for the whole image and then again on the shaded areas of the bird. NIK 40/40 on the latter and then some Tim Grey Dodge and Burn. As always, starting with the RAW and getting the color balance and tonalities right is the way to do. Almost forgot -- I executed a large crop to get the bird out of the center.

Best way to ID these on territory is to listen for the che-bek call (if I am remembering correctly). What month?

Last: you need to learn to move the AF point around to get the bird well back in the frame.

Best advice: get yourself a copy of Digital Basics II ... And keep posting!

Excellent help. Thank you! Here's a re-try. He didn't make a peep while observed about 8:30 on a July morning. He flew down to the lake from the forest surrounding it. His size and shape suggest a Least over a Willow, but I still have my doubts. Been devouring Digital Basics -- fabulous resource, unique!
