The neon looking head on this penguin is very neat. I like the pose. This would have made a nice vertical.

Very cool bird and I really like how it is walking towards you. Wish there was a little more room below. I would reduce the yellows a bit as the whole image has a slight yellow cast.

Bucket list bird for me :) Tell us about getting there. Ditto Isaac plus a bit brighter. And ditto John on the vertical suggestion.

Thanks John, Isaac and Artie for the comments. This was full frame, I didn't think about vertical, but agree it works well as a vertical. I found this one tough for color Isaac, I think because the reflected light from the landscape is very green/yellow. I'll go back and try to tweak it to improve.

Artie, I went on a boat trip from the southern tip of NZ (Heritage Expeditions charters the ship all year, works down there in the southern summer). On Enderby there are lots of YEPs, as well as many other birds and sea mammals. Easy to photograph. These guys don't have the big colonies, but are scattered all over the island in pairs and small groups. Tame, as is often the case on these island locations. We did a walk around the island, got to see a lot of penguins in a variety of settings.

Thanks Greg. Bucket list for me ...

Here is a quick and dirty repost. Sorry about your signature :)

ps: assuming that your camera allows you to save different AF points and modes depending on horizontal or vertical, it is best to select save an upper point or array for verticals so that when a bird walks towards you you can just turn the camera on end and you are good to go without having to switch the AF point or mode ...
