Same bird as previous post. Irritated by other interloper pulling branches on his pond apple stand flew closer to let him know. This is landing. Still using one AF with 8 surrounding points. This is example where previous frame I was right on the head and in this frame I momentarily fell off (entire AF box high and to the left of head) and it stayed on general plane till next frame where I got back on the bird.

The pose on the bird is nice and i like the setting. Keeps testing that auto focus.

Nice pose. Again I am seeing smoothing on the rear flank and the neck. The stick pointing at the bird's neck is a problem but would be easy to lose.

Hi David, well timed for the landing pose, and I like the show of the wings. I like the smooth upper BG.

Thanks to all for comments and suggestions. Went back to the raw file and those areas you mention Artie are smooth due to a large crop (about 35% of entire frame for both posts of this bird). At 400mm this stand was far away. The detail just isn't there. I was actually surprised I got as much as I did. Also, I have yet to study your and Arash's guides in detail (my bad, I do have them and I will). I am still spending more time learning the body and settings I should be using. Getting back on the bike after 10 years and with mirrorless it's a little different experience. Again, thanks to all for the comments and help.
    Peace,
    David

Hi David, YAW but my belief is that the problem is with the original image capture as far as the detail-less areas are concerned. Here is a huge crop, > more than 85% of the original D850 pixels cropped away. And the image is 1200 wide < 395kb... Huge crops for the web of images that are sharp to begin with should show at least some FFD ... Or perhaps the problem is with the EOS R.

I am with Artie on this. The whole bird is soft, which I would bet is from motion blur not from the crop. I would recommend trying to get closer to your subjects and paying special attention to making sure you have a fast enough shutter speed to get a sharp file. Sure it takes practice and time to learn a new system, but no sense in cropping and processing a file if the raw is not tack sharp.
