To get this shot I went North(Glen Quaich, Perthshire) during the hours of darkness to a place I know where the Red Grouse hang out. At this time of the year, they mostly lay low in the heather, as the Grouse shooting season is active. I got myself positioned down low in amongst the heather, making sure I would have a good BG. After the sun rose over the mountain behind me, this bird popped its head up and I managed a few shots.

Great SH, details, light and killer complimentary BG. I also love the low angle so I won't complain (nor does it detract from the image for me) about foreground OOF vegetation. TFS

You sure have managed some fantastic shots of this species. Beautiful details and background. Not a fan of the out of focus vegetation though.

Beautiful shot except for the out of focus vegetation.

I love the details and the colors

Excellent portrait in great light, like the strong eye contact and the OOF fore ground foliage works for me to frame it.

Thanks for that. I wasn't too sure about the OOF heather myself. I thought it may cause differences of opinion.

Well executed image of a difficult species. I'd go out of the box with a pano crop to eliminate the o-o-f foreground vegetation ...

Hi Will, great pose and HA, and I really like the light, detail and colours on the Grouse. I like the complementary BG too. Before reading any comments and doing a page scroll, I found removing the lower foliage doesn't harm the image.
